Community Service Report
Windy Harbour:- Western Australia, Saturday 23rd Jan
2010.
Windy Harbour is a holiday settlement situated on 190
hectares of a Crown Reserve, surrounded by D'entrecasteaux
National Park on the south coast of Western Australia about
90km south of Manjimup and 27km south of Northcliffe.
Approximately 220 cottages have been developed on individual
leases since the early 1900's. Leasehold tenure, seasonal
occupation and a strong community spirit have generated a
settlement of unique character.

Project:-
1. To inspect LROC’s previous work at Callup Hill where
rubber belting had been laid in sand hills, to ensure
environmental conservation was achieved while maintaining
recreational 4 x 4 access to the coast
2. To inspect LROC’s previous work at Fish Creek in
D'entrecasteaux National Park
a. Wind break fencing built in 2009 (see photo) for dune
restoration at a beach access blowout
b. Rubber matting laid in conjunction with the above
3. In co-operation with the
Department of Environment and Conservation, Shire of
Manjimup, and the Community of Windy Harbour, the Land-Rover
Owners Club of W. A. (Inc) undertook community service of
maintenance of the beach access and scenic walking trail
going eastwards from the Windy Harbour settlement for 1.5
km.

Project contributors:-

o 28 adult members contributing 200 working hours
* DEC contributing:-
o On site assistance and advice
o Mechanical brush cutters, chain saw, and various tools
o Decking Oil and Paint Brushes.
* Shire of Manjimup for various assistance
* Local Community
o On site assistance and advice
o Evening BBQ

Task:-
1. To remove brush and overgrowth which was impeded movement
on a scenic walking trail and beach access stairs.
2. Paint a lookout and stairways with decking oil
3. Remove sand from the beach side of beach access stairs

Action:-
1. Removal and pruning brush and plants which were intruding
and inhibiting human movement on the access and scenic
walking path (see photo) and encroaching on the principal
stairway and adjacent look out. (see photo)
2. Painting the lookout and stairways with decking oil. (see
photo)
3. Removal of sand from the beach access stairway (see
photo)
4. Inspected and assessed previous work at Fish Creek as
being very sound.
Outcomes:-
1. At Windy Harbour an enhanced and well maintained scenic
walkway with ecological sensitivity to minimise humanities
footprint in D'entrecasteaux National Park.
2. Fish Creek dune vegetation restoration sound and rubber
belting inhibiting erosion from 4x4 usage at beach access
point.
3. Callup Hill Rubber Matting in excellent condition and
exceeding conservation and durability expectations.
